Birding on the Colorado River


Get your binoculars ready! Join Bill Harris and Cary Atwood, two expert birders, as you float the Colorado River and search the skies for eagles, peregrine falcons, blue herons, and more! Sign-up for our 3-day, 2-night rafting adventure along one of the most beautiful sections of river in the country, Ruby-Horsethief.

Where: The Ruby-Horsethief stretch of the Colorado River

What: Colorado Canyons Association is excited to lead our 7th Annual Birding Adventure on the Colorado River! Relax aboard an oar raft as you travel 25 miles through Ruby and Horsethief Canyons. Marvel at the area’s serenity, while winding through dramatic sandstone canyons deep in the heart of the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area, all while discovering the amazing avian diversity along the way. Delicious, freshly prepared meals, comfortable campsites, and unhindered night skies will surely provide an unforgettable experience. Expert and novice birders alike are welcome!

In 2024, participants on our birding trip saw over 50 species of bird along the Colorado River and in 2025 we hope to see even more; don’t forget your binoculars!

Cost: $535 for CCA members; $585 for non-members - Cost includes:

  • Fully guided river trip with CCA’s certified River Guides

  • Expert birding guide

  • Campsites, including a stay at our private riverside camp, Catalpa

  • Delicious food and beverages

  • Group river equipment

  • Shuttle transportation
